Šarec about Počivalšek: By negotiating on the other side, he wastes our trust

During his visit to Brussels, Prime Minister Marjan Šarec commented on quite a political happening following the resignation of his government.

He among other things commented on the meeting of SMC party President Zdravko Počivalšek with the head of the SDS party on Friday. He also rejected the allegations claiming that the government had given a gift to Počivalšek giving its consent to the 2020 Annual Capital Investment Management Plan in order for Počivalšek to prefer the cooperation with Šarec’s party of LMŠ.

According to Prime Minister and President of LMŠ party Marjan Šarec, a diverse political happening after his resignation was expected. However, he noted that SMC President Zdravko Počivalšek, to whom he offered a cooperation before the possible early elections and had just met with the SDS party on Friday, “is somehow wasting the trust on our side by attending negotiations on the other side”. SMC replied to these criticisms stating that the credibility had already gone down the drain by the publicly offered cooperation in the elections.

Zdravko Počivalšek posted on Twitter later that Šarec still has time to “complete his television offer with a concrete cooperation offer. This would be the best way to build confidence”.

However, the Prime Minister, who resigned and is dealing with current business only, rejected the allegations claiming that the government had given a gift or a “candy” to Počivalšek on Thursday by giving its consent to the 2020 Annual Capital Investment Management Plan in order for Počivalšek not to decide to cooperate with SDS President Janez Janša. The SMC party replied to these criticisms stating that the credibility had already gone down the drain by LMŠ publicly offering SMC a cooperation in the election. The document, which contains the plan for the consolidation, management and restructuring of state-owned tourist companies, was prepared by Počivalšek, who has been running only the current affairs of the Ministry of Economic Development and Technology since Šarec’s resignation.

After a bilateral meeting in Brussels with Charles Michel, President of the European Council, Šarec also stressed that he is even more sure about the correctness of his decision to resign. As he explained, this “opening of windows and creating draft” revealed “what was happening, what was being talked about”. “Some ideas that we previously suspected to exist” were revealed, he added.

Šarec still insists that early elections are the best solution, resp. a way out of the current situation. He sees the discussions about the new coalition as “maintaining seats, maintaining positions, fearing of losing a job”.

Besides SMC’s Počivalšek, representatives of the DeSUS and NSi parties joined separate destalks on Friday with SDS about the possible formation of a new coalition.
