Janša on the phone with the EC President; the EU closes external borders

Slovenian Prime Minister Janez Janša announced via Twitter today that he spoke to the European Commission (EC) President Ursula von der Leyen on the phone. “Finally good news from Brussels,” he wrote, explaining that to limit the spread of coronavirus, the EU is closing its external borders, banning the export of medical equipment and introducing guidelines for internal border traffic.

As Janša tweeted, the EU is closing external borders except borders with Switzerland, Iceland, Norway and the United Kingdom, banning exports of critical medical and protective equipment to fight the new coronavirus outside the EU, introducing guidelines for freeing up freight traffic at internal borders, and coordinating the proposal for exceptions at the closure of internal borders for personal traffic.

A video conference of EU leaders is planned for Tuesday, aimed at taking action to fight the spread of the new coronavirus, which will be the first for Janez Janša as Slovenian Prime Minister.

European leaders held a video conference on coronavirus last Tuesday to discuss measures to help the economy.
