Responding to an initiative by the new government to activate legislation giving the army police powers, President Borut Pahor said in his capacity of commander-in-chief of the Slovenian Armed Forces that he understood the need to give the military additional powers within the bounds of law and for a maximum of three months.
The President of the Republic today discussed – separately with the defence minister Matej Tonin and the interior minister Aleš Hojs – the reasoning for activating the Article 37a of the Defence Act. The decision seems reasonable and acceptable in the current circumstances, marked by the increase in illegal border crossings and action against the spread of the coronavirus.
According to Pahor, there are no reasons for the military’s involvement in other tasks currently being carried out by the police.
