An Exclusive interview with photographer Jaka Ivancic PHOTO

Many expat people, who move to Slovenia from other parts of the world, in other words, many of our readers, wonder when they see Jaka Ivancic’s work:  Who is the man behind these amazing photographs?

DC Slovenia’s Editor-in-Chief was definitely one of those who admired Jaka’s photos when she biked for the 1st time from Izola to Koper this year passing by absolutely stunning photos of Obala and surroundings signed with Jaka Ivancic’s name.

  1.  Dear Mr. Ivancic  – how did you become You?

I’ve always been captivated by landscapes and the unique way they speak to us, which is what initially drew me to photography. Growing up surrounded by Slovenia’s breathtaking scenery, I was inspired to capture these moments in a way that brings out both their beauty and their raw, natural character. Photography became a language for me to communicate this connection, and over time, my style evolved to balance technical precision with an emotive approach. It’s been a journey of constantly learning, exploring, and seeking to see the world anew each day.

  1. How do you make such magnificent photos, what are the techniques, and equipment and what are the qualities a good photographer should have? Who is your role model?

In landscape photography, timing, light, and patience are everything. I work with professional-grade equipment, favouring cameras and lenses that bring out clarity and depth in landscape shots, especially in challenging light conditions. I tend to shoot in natural light, waiting for those moments when the sun’s angle transforms the scene with warmth and contrast. A good photographer, I believe, has a deep respect for the subject and knows how to bring out its essence without over-manipulation. My role models are photographers who understand this, capturing the spirit of a place in a way that feels both profound and genuine.

  1. You received a prize from the Municipality of Piran on October 12th, 2024. What kind of a prize is it? Which other prizes have you won so far and what do they mean to you?

The prize I received from the Municipality of Piran is a profound honour for me, as it’s a recognition from the very community that inspires much of my work. This award acknowledges my commitment to showcasing the beauty of Piran and the surrounding areas, a landscape rich with culture, history, and unique charm. Over the years, I’ve received other awards as well, each of which holds special meaning, not just as recognition but as encouragement to continue refining my craft and deepening my connection with the landscapes I love.

  1. What are your plans for the next 5 years?

Looking forward, I’m excited to deepen my work, perhaps venturing into new landscapes and challenging myself with fresh perspectives. I also hope to share my knowledge through workshops, exhibitions, or even a book that reflects my journey in photography. My aim is to keep exploring and evolving while inspiring others to appreciate the beauty of nature.

Its difficult to find only 3 favourites. But. One of my all-time favourite photos is actually one of the first I ever took that truly satisfied me. It’s a shot of Čevljarska ulica in Koper, taken from the city tower. This image will always be special, not only because it captures the charm of Koper, my hometown, but also because it marked a pivotal moment in my journey as a photographer. Although I’ve captured many images I love since then, this photo remains a favourite, and it’s currently on display at the exhibition in Portorož.
