First SMC President (and foreign affairs minister) Miro Cerar announced that he is leaving the party because he does not want to be a member, let alone an honorary president of a party that has become dishonourable. He has not said whether he will return to the National Assembly after his termination of office. He urged SMC party members to start using their own head, but if that does not happen, he urges SMC members to quit.
Cerar’s decision came after SMC party joined the coalition with Janez Janša’s SDS party. As Cerar explained in his statement, SMC is no longer his party as it is no longer credible in implementing its founding values as its leadership no longer sees beyond themselves.
He noted that SMC is no longer “a party of Miro Cerar” (SMC – Stranka Mira Cerarja), and also no longer the Modern Centre Party (SMS – Stranka modernega centra as renamed later on) – unless modernity is about following the latest fashions and changing like the wind, and the centre is about inability to formulate decisive and fine political views.
