No agreement of EU finance ministers on anti-corona fiscal package; continuing on Thursday

Despite a marathon videoconference, EU finance ministers have not yet succeeded in overcoming deep disagreements over the fiscal pandemic recovery package. The meeting was postponed and will resume on Thursday, according to spokesman Luis Rego via Twitter.

“Our planned Eurogroup press conference for this morning at 10 am will have to be cancelled, as the meeting was suspended and will continue tomorrow. Details to be announced later,” Rego tweeted.

The meeting had begun on Tuesday with a one-hour delay at 4 pm. It was then interrupted after several hours and announced the resumption at 9pm, which was then postponed several times. The unofficial announcements that the meeting will last until morning came true. However, still no agreement was reached.

The EU-members’ leaders have given the Eurogroup two weeks to prepare proposals, which they must approve themselves. That deadline expires on Thursday. The outcome of this meeting will depend on when the next summit will be held. It is unofficially mentioned that it will probably happen after Easter.
