The EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini appointed 43 heads of EU delegations around the world on Tuesday, awarding the Papua New Guinea post to Slovenia’s diplomat Jernej Videtič.
Videtič, Slovenia’s former ambassador to Montenegro, is currently the head of the delegation in Guyana. He is expected to take up his new post in autumn.
He is the first Slovenian to head a delegation outside Southeast Europe, or the Western Balkans.
Apart from Videtič, Slovenia has another diplomat holding an ambassadorial post in the EU’s External Action Service. Former Foreign Minister Samuel Žbogar is currently heading the EU delegation to North Macedonia.
