Candidates for commissioners and political guidelines for the Commission’s work in the new mandate were proposed by von der Leyen in September, and after hearings in the committees of the European Parliament, the European Commission was approved by the European Parliament last week.

The new College of Commissioners will have five Executive Vice-Presidents and 20 Commissioners, divided by department, Member State they come from and political priorities. They are also joined by the Vice-President of the Commission and the High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs.

Commissioner from Slovenia, Marta Kos, took over the portfolio for expansion.

After confirming the European Commission for the 2024-2029 mandate in the European Parliament last week, President von der Leyen said: “Today is a good day for Europe. The vote showed that the center was right. I am grateful for the confidence that Parliament has shown in the new college. The vote of the European Parliament allows us to start work on December 1.”
