Fabula festival opened by German writer Bernhard Schlink with his novel Olga

Fabula World Literature Festival was opened at the Cankar Culture Center on Saturday by one of the most important German authors, Bernhard Schlink, who is visiting Ljubljana with his novel Olga that focuses on the fate of women 100 years ago.

In the novel translated by Brane Čop, the author presents a woman of humble background, who only wanted education, and the upper middle class man, who identified himself with military, colonialism, an idea of something greater. Schlink found his inspiration for the story in a true historical character who attended a poorly prepared expedition to the North Pole and died. As the author said, he was interested in what happened to his lady partner.

Schlink achieved worldwide success with the 1995 novel titled A Reader. A movie director Stephen Daldry made a movie of the same title based on this book, starring Kate Winslet and Ralph Fiennes.
