Toni Vodišek 24 year old Slovenian kitesurfer won the Formula Kite World Championship in 2022. He competed at the 2024 Summer Olympics in the inaugural men’s Formula Kite event, where he reached the finals and won the silver medal.
His father Rajko Vodisek was also a kitesurfer, described as one of the “pioneers” of the sport in Slovenia.
DC Slovenia had recently the pleasure of interviewing Toni Vodisek thanks to the support by his amazing girlfriend Nika Hilj.
What does this silver medal mean to you, your family – your father, your city Koper?
Winning this silver medal is an incredibly special moment for me and my family. My father has been my greatest supporter from the start, so this medal is as much his as it is mine. For Koper, I hope it’s a source of pride, showing that our small city by the sea can produce athletes who compete on the global stage. The whole community has been behind me, and I feel honored to bring this success home.
Can you describe the feelings of a young man like yourself who represents his country in the world?
It’s a feeling that’s hard to put into words. Representing Slovenia is a huge responsibility, but it’s also incredibly fulfilling. Every time I take to the water with our flag on my sail, I feel a surge of pride. There’s no better motivation than knowing you’re out there for your country and your people. It pushes me to give my best, every single time.
How were you received in the city squares in Ljubljana and Koper after coming back from the Olympic Games? You had those two big celebrations and most probably a few private ones. How was it and, now that the hype is a bit quieter, how do you feel?
The celebrations were overwhelming in the best way possible! In both Ljubljana and Koper, the energy was incredible, and seeing so many people come out to support me was humbling. The private gatherings with close friends and family were more emotional and allowed me to reflect on what I had achieved. Now that the hype has calmed down, I feel a bit more grounded, but the medal and the memories are still fresh. I’m just grateful for all the love and support.
To whom do you dedicate your victories and medals?
My victories and medals are dedicated to my family, especially my father, who has been there every step of the way. But also to everyone in Slovenia and around the world who have believed in me and supported me throughout my journey. Without them, none of this would have been possible.
Did you find any time to enjoy Paris?
Not as much as I would have liked! The focus was completely on the competition. Maybe I’ll come back one day just to explore without the pressure of competition!
We’ve heard you always carry your “žar” with you when you travel to competitions. Did you do the same during your trip to the Olympic Games 2024? Tell the readers of DC Slovenia about this habit. Why do you do it? Is this a part of your “secret” as a sportsman?
(laughs) Yes, it’s true! I bring my small portable “žar” (grill) with me whenever I can. There’s something about grilling up a good meal after a long day of competing or training that just keeps me grounded. I did bring it with me to Paris, and it became a bit of a tradition with my team. It’s not really a secret – it’s more about having a slice of home with me wherever I go. Plus, good food never hurts!
You are a passionate gamer. Which computer games are your favorite?
I’m really into strategy games and first-person shooters. I love playing League of legends to get my adrenaline going. Gaming is a nice way to relax and also keep my mind sharp. It’s a good mental break from the physical intensity of kiting.
You’ve spoken about the importance of your girlfriend’s support. Tell us a bit about that.
Nika has been a rock for me. She’s been by my side through the ups and downs, from tough training sessions to the highest moments of my career. It’s not easy to maintain a relationship when you’re traveling and competing so much, but she understands what this life entails. Her support allows me to focus completely on my goals, knowing that I have someone who always has my back.
What kind of plans do you have for your sporting career?
The next big target is another medal at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics. I’ve tasted success with the silver, but I know I can push myself even further. In the meantime, I’ll continue competing at the highest level and refining my skills. I’m also thinking about how I can give back to the kiting community, perhaps through coaching or mentoring younger athletes in the future. But for now, my focus is on improving and staying at the top of my game.
The interview with Toni Vodisek is part of the series of interviews with the best Slovenian athletes who made exceptional success at the Paris Olympic and Paralympic games 2024 so stay tuned for more!
