Slovenia among the most successful countries in achieving sustainable development goals again this year

Slovenia has been most effective in eradicating extreme forms of poverty and providing accessibility to cleaner energy resources.

It is ranked in 12th place out of 162 countries this year, having held 8th place last year. The authors of the report, published by the SDSN Association under the aegis of the UN and the Bertelsmann Stiftung Foundation at the end of June, however note that this year’s results are not entirely comparable with results from previous years due to a change in the methodology.

As reported by the Government Office for Development and European Cohesion Policy, in achieving 17 global goals, Slovenia has been most effective in eradicating extreme forms of poverty and providing accessibility to cleaner energy resources.

The biggest challenges, on the other hand, remain regarding measures aimed at eliminating hunger and ensuring sustainable methods of food production and consumption, measures to tackle the effects of climate change, and conservation of the sea and maritime resources.

As indicated in the report, four years after the adoption of sustainable development goals and the Paris Agreement on climate changes, no country had yet realised all the goals. Furthermore, regression has been recorded in numerous fields.

The report states that the achievement of sustainable development goals requires both structural and systemic changes that would enable devising and implementing measures necessary to achieve the desired progress. In this context, the report highlights the need for better cooperation between the government and private sectors and civil society and, indeed foremost, the urgent need for involvement of all stakeholders in the formulation and implementation of public policies.
