Note from the editor

A week after…

the USA elections and the confirmation that Slovenia leads EU Enlargement Portfolio

Slowly but surely, as November sneaks into our lives, Ljubljana turns into the foggy and cold realm of what soon feels like “eternal winter”.

But – no need for bitterness- Soon the “lučke“ and „vroč kakav“ will warm our hearts and help bring the feeling of winter magic and, as one of my friends, a young ex-pat mum of a soon 3-year-old boy, resentfully reacted to the foggy Lj weather by calling it the Mordor, the capital of Slovenia will transform into the „kingdom of Arendelle”.

Did you know that the Frozen franchise was inspired by Norway and heavily influenced by Norwegian nature, culture, and traditions? And if one wants to explore different Frozen-themed sights and activities in Norway there are organised tours to help create an enchanted winter thematic adventure! Perhaps Ljubljana can do that too and “smile away” the fog and winter blues.

After the Turkish embassy in Ljubljana celebrated the 101st Anniversary of the Turkish Republic, I was in contact with a gentleman, Mr. Ufuk Unal who was the GM of Turkish Airlines in Slovenia, and who worked for 6 years here and who now moved to Oslo. We hope to be able to bring you an exclusive interview with him as well as with his successor in Slovenia Mr. Halid Koca in one of the first DC Slovenia In Focus special issues dedicated to Türkiye.

The week behind us brought the news that Slovenia leads EU Enlargement Portfolio which is a Strategic Move for the Balkans and Ukraine’s Reconstruction. The recent confirmation of Marta Kos as EU Commissioner for Enlargement marks a new chapter in the European Union’s approach to the Western Balkans and other aspiring member states. Slovenia’s role in securing this portfolio reflects its commitment to guiding and coordinating the EU accession process and deepening collaboration with nations sharing European values and ambitions. DC Slovenia is proud that one of the First interviews published after the re-launch in 2024 was with Ms. Kos and we wish her success in her new role as EU Commissioner. You can read more in the DC Featured Column.

As we reflect on the week behind us, we want to highlight two events that marked the Slovenian luxury sky – the Virtuoso Chairman’s Event organized by the Slovenian Tourist Board (STB) in partnership with top Slovenian luxury providers, including the Luxury Slovenia agency, InterContinental Ljubljana, Kempinski Palace Portorož and Otočec Castle Hotel, alongside Ljubljana Tourism and the Portorož Tourist Board. One of the events during this multi-event project that DC caught a glimpse of – namely The Kempinski’s Night of Stars, definitely sprinkled a bit of magic dust on Slovenia and brought a sense of luxury and quality into our everyday lives.

The other event is the news that comes from Dubai, that the Slovenian Chef Ana Ros won the Best Chef award voted by her colleagues.

Slovenia proves in so many ways to be the leader and DC Slovenia is proud to be The news platform in English that follows those stories of success.
