On the 20th anniversary of Slovenia’s membership in the EU, on May 9th, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign and European Affairs of Slovenia Tanja Fajon hosted a discussion in Nova Gorica with some former MEPs – Borut Pahor, Jelko Kacin and Romana Jordan – and with former commissioner Janez Potočnik.

The participants recalled memories, shared experiences from difficult times working in EU institutions and discussed the benefits that membership brought to Slovenia and the challenges Europe has to deal with. They agreed that Slovenia can be proud of the path it has taken in the Union, in which “Slovenia grew from an -excellent student – as many described Slovenia during the negotiations for the entry – into a -decisive member- that shapes EU politics and at the same time defends Slovenia’s positions. “

After the Discussion the participants joined other distinguished guests during the State Ceremony celebration of 20th anniversary of Slovenia’s entry into the EU in Nova Gorica, where 20 years ago the president of European Commission Romano Prodi and Prime Minister of RS dr. Anton Rop were counting down the last seconds before joining the Union of European countries, which was one of the turning points in the lives of Slovenian citizens.
