Slovenia’s population on 1 January this year was 2,095,861, which is 14,953 persons or 0.7 percent more than a year ago. While the number of Slovenian citizens decreased last year – just like in the previous years, the number of foreign citizens increased again.
In 2019, the number of Slovenian citizens decreased by 3,205 inhabitants or 0.2 percent to 1,939,510. The decline in the number of Slovenian citizens was thus slightly higher than in 2018.
At the beginning of the year, the population consisted of more men than women. There were 1,051,066 males and 1,044,795 females.
51% of Slovenian citizens were women (992,496 women and 947,014 men), but only one third were women among foreign citizens (104,052 men and 52,299 women).
The share of women among Slovenian citizens has been slowly declining for many years, and after a growth for years among foreigners, it has decreased by almost two percentage points over the last two years. The lower proportion of women among foreigners is most likely due to the fact that a large part of the influx of foreigners in recent years has been represented by temporary workers in industries such as construction.
